The Emotional Child
We all experience a range of emotions daily. I like to have tools available to avoid the intense highs and the intense lows. It’s important to help children to have coping strategies and tools to manage their feelings and emotions too.
We often want to rescue our children when they are feeling emotional and that comes from a place of love. We can instead empower our children by supporting them, letting them feel their feelings, being mindful of their emotional needs and giving them the skills to manage life’s inevitable challenges.
It is a good idea for your child to have his own little toolbox. The tools that have worked for us along with breathing techniques is allowing Xavier to choose from his own little essential oil kit. I have the dōTERRA Kids Collection Kit and the Family Touch Kit together and we often open this and I ask “what oil would you like today?”. Sometimes Xavier will choose by colour or intuition and other times when he isn’t calm enough to make a choice, I will choose for him. I use the Calmer and Steady Blends a lot as Xavier can get over excited or over stimulated for a variety of reasons including needing to have food or a drink, having too much screen time, changing routine. Certain noises can trigger him too. After choosing an oil, I like to apply it under his feet, over his belly, on the back of neck, on the wrists. Sometimes applying all over giving him a little massage makes it a fun experience.
